Royal Albatross Colony and Fort Taiaroa
Taiaroa Head, the location of the only mainland colony of albatross in the world, was used by Maori as a defensive retreat before being fortified by European settlers in 1885.
Unique for the diversity of wildlife which abounds on this small headland, Taiaroa Head is now protected as a nature reserve.
Underneath the nature reserve lie the tunnels of Fort Taiaroa, established over 100 years ago to counter the threat of invasion. The Observation Post overlooking part of the albatross colony and now a museum, displays the only working Armstrong Disappearing Gun of its type in the world.
In 1987 Dunedin conservationists formed the Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust with the aim of saving the penguin by restoring coastal forest and controlling predators. The penguin is the focus but the Trusts efforts also benefit other native species of plant and animal.
